Happy 50th Birthday, Goma

Filed under: global, wildlife — Tags: , , , , , — kungfucianism @ 7:51 pm

Tomorrow is Goma’s 50th birthday. Goma was born in Zoo Basel (Switzerland) and was the first gorilla to be born in a European zoo.

Zooborns has an amazing series of photographs documenting the absolutely adorable Goma.

Sydney Turns Red

Filed under: awesome, global — Tags: , , — kungfucianism @ 6:31 pm

The citizens of Sydney, Australia woke up to fiery red sky, something that has never been seen before. According to Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Jane Golding, the red haze was due to “The fiery haze was the result of the sun hitting the blanket of dust.”

It is quite a sight to behold.

The Sluggard

Filed under: awesome, bible — Tags: , , , — kungfucianism @ 9:59 am

A poem based on Proverbs 24:30-34.

‘Tis the voice of the sluggard; I heard him complain,
“You have waked me too soon, I must slumber again.”
As the door on its hinges, so he on his bed,
Turns his sides and his shoulders and his heavy head.

“A little more sleep, and a little more slumber;”
Thus he wastes half his days, and his hours without number,
And when he gets up, he sits folding his hands,
Or walks about sauntering, or trifling he stands.

I pass’d by his garden, and saw the wild brier,
The thorn and the thistle grow broader and higher;
The clothes that hang on him are turning to rags;
And his money still wastes till he starves or he begs.

I made him a visit, still hoping to find
That he took better care for improving his mind:
He told me his dreams, talked of eating and drinking;
But scarce reads his Bible, and never loves thinking.

Said I then to my heart, “Here’s a lesson for me,”
This man’s but a picture of what I might be:
But thanks to my friends for their care in my breeding,
Who taught me betimes to love working and reading.

by Isaac Watts

I have so much to learn. Allow God to inspire me.

Novak’s back in NYC

Filed under: husbands — Tags: , , , — kungfucianism @ 5:38 pm

I’ll be back later tonight to post my experience at the opening ceremony of this year’s U.S. Open on Aug. 31. It was a good (and cold!) night.

But, just want to share Novak’s choice of ORANGE this year. He looks mighty fine!

The official U.S. Open website has a great article about him. It hasn’t been a great year for Nole, especially in the Grand Slams and the hopes for Andy Murray (who I hear is headed toward great things!) and not to mention, the New York crowd really hates him after last year’s Quarterfinal with Andy Roddick (who is a major diva and douche). The article talks about how much Novak has toned down with his jokes. I’m watching Novak’s second round match right now and the commentator mentioned how little joy is left in Novak nowadays.

It’s so sad to read. I am a big fan of Rafael Nadal but without Novak’s usual happiness and joy on the court, men’s tennis returns to what is has always been – boringly consistent.

Don’t get me started on the women’s side, because that is some major drama!

This is a very short but very endearing and sweet film about a shy guy and girl who express their love to each other through post-its.

She, Him and 500 Days of Summer

Filed under: awesome, movies, music — Tags: , , , — kungfucianism @ 11:46 pm

Okay, I have yet to watch Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt’s film, “500 Days of Summer” although I have only been hearing amazing things about it. But everytime I’m all set to watch it, something keeps me from it. I’ve a fan of Deschanel’s since Elf (which is a movie I watch over and over again during the winter holidays) so I hope I get to catch 500 Days soon.

Zooey and Joseph make a great couple and this is an adorable music video of them together for the song “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” by Zooey Deschanel’s band She & Him.
