Paper Heart

April 21, 2009 kungfucianism 1 comment

Look what it is: an Asian main character! This is unbelievable.
Charlyne Yi stars in the upcoming Paper Heart with one of Hollywood’s hottest actors, Michael Cera. Charlyne has been around in the industry for a while now as a performing artist, writer, comedian, and actress. She made appearances in films like Knocked Up, Cloverfield and Semi-Pro. Paper Heart is her debut film.

Movie Synopsis:

Charlyne Yi does not believe in love. Or so she says. Well, at the very least, she doesn’t believe in fairy-tale love or the Hollywood mythology of love, and her own experiences have turned her into yet another modern-day skeptic. PAPER HEART follows Charlyne as she embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn’t fully understand. As she and her good friend (and director) Nicholas search for answers and advice about love, Charlyne talks with friends and strangers, scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They each offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does true love really exist? Then, shortly after filming begins, Charlyne meets a boy after her own heart: Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, her pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a fresh new urgency. Charlyne risks losing the person she finds closest to her heart. Combining elements of documentary and traditional storytelling, reality and fantasy, PAPER HEART brings a fresh perspective to the modern romance and redefines the classic love story.

This is really exciting! And the movie looks really sweet! It won the screenwriting award at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. How impressive!

Wang Lee Hom

Yeah, I’m on a posting rampage; probably a way to distract myself from studying.

Anyway, just want to share a little about Wang Lee Hom. He’s one of the most famous entertainers in Taiwan and China. He has been in the business for over 10 years. He’s actually Asian-American, born in Rochester, NY, graduated as valedictorian in high school, and went on to major in music and Asian studies at Williams College (boo…). He was on the path to med school (he comes from a family of doctors) when he decided to follow his dreams of being a musician and went to Taiwan to make it big. I really wish he could branch out in the United States. He’s one of the must talented musicians I have ever heard. He plays 10 instruments. I saw him perform at Mohegan Sun and he is an amazing performer! He also had a role in Ang Lee’s acclaimed film, Lust, Caution.

Here’s a sample of his music. His latest album is entitled “Heartbeat” and this is the first single off of his latest album also called, “Heartbeat.” English subtitles included in the video. He uses a really excellent mix of piano and electric guitar.

And you might not believe this but he has already approached the 30 year old age mark! Haha

Chinese people are scary…

PostSecret is an ongoing art project that allows anyone to send in postcards confessing their deepest secrets anonymously. Someone out there is secretly afraid of almost a quarter of the human population!

There’s something wrong with this and it’s not funny. I’m not sure how it’s possible to claim to be afraid of a certain type of peoples….and not be racist.
